Located in the province of Livorno in Tuscany, the port of Piombino, formerly known as Falesia, dates back to the 5th century. Thanks to its favorable situation between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ligurian Sea, it was exploited by the Etruscans to supply it with iron, from the Elba Island, and to distribute finished products throughout the Mediterranean basin. In the 19th century, thanks to the installation of iron machining centers, Piombino acquired a great reputation. The beginning of the 20th century sees the launch of the construction of several works that will transform Piombino into a true multifunctional port. The port of Piombino is also the gateway to the island of Elba, to which many ferries cross a dozen kilometers by the canal, loaded with travelers. With more than three million passengers to Cavo and Rio Marina, the port of Piombino has become Italy's third largest port. It is also connected with Gulf of Aranci and Olbia in Sardinia, Bastia in Corsica and the island of Pianosa. There are up to 65 daily connections depending on the time of year.

The city of Piombino has also preserved beautiful architectural evidence from the past. Its fortified character, with the dungeon (torrione), the pivellino and the 17th century Palazzo Nuovo, makes it a pretty medieval village with a beautiful view of the sea from Piazza Bovio.
