Located in the north-east of Corsica, at the base of Cap Corse, between sea and mountains, Bastia is the main port of the island and the main commercial city of Northern Corsica. Its connections with Italy and mainland France make it a very popular ferry port. Maritime traffic is multiplied by eleven between the lowest months of the off-season (November-March) and the most important months of the high-season (July-August). Bastia connects Corsica with Nice, Toulon and Marseille in France with Livorno, Savona, Piombino and Genoa in Italy and Portoferraio on the Island of Elba. Depending on the time of year, up to 15 ferry connections per day are operated. The city center of Bastia includes some tourist attractions such as the citadel (also called Terra Nova), the Governor's Palace, the Old Port with its neighborhood and the market square.
