The Italian port of Portoferraio is located on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north of the island of Elba, the largest island in the national park of the Tuscan Archipelago. The island's main port, Portoferraio prospered thanks to the transport of iron ore to the mainland, first exploited by the Etruscans and then the Romans, hence its current name. In the early 1970s, at the time of the iron industry crisis, mines closed and Portoferraio, with beautiful beaches, turned naturally to tourism.

The ferry port of Portoferraio connects the ports of Piombino in Italy, Bastia in Corsica and Cavo on the island of Elba, with up to 47 daily crossings lasting between 15 minutes for the service of Cavo and 1 hour 30 for the service of Bastia. When arriving by ferry, it is difficult to remain impassive at the sight of the harbor and the port unanimously considered the safest in the world, at the entrance of which we see the Torre del Martello (Tower of the Hammer) which makes part of the fortress of the Linguella. Capital city of Portoferraio, with Renaissance charm, displays its walls of extraordinary architectural beauty, built in the 16th century by Cosimo I de Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The city is also the first place of exile of Napoleon Bonaparte. His residence in the Palazzina dei Mulini, north of the old town, became the museum and the Napoleon library.
